Train the Trainer: Creating A Community-Specific Juvenile Justice Data Snapshot

Based on popular demand, Mariame Kaba (of Project NIA) will lead a ONE-TIME workshop for interested participants to help them to understand how to use juvenile justice data. Specifically, Project NIA has created two neighborhood-specific (North Lawndale and Rogers Park) data profiles over the past few months. These snapshots have been very well-received by community stakeholders. We have been asked to help other communities to create their own neighborhood juvenile justice data snapshots. While we don't have the capacity to fulfill all requests for assistance, we can share our technical expertise through a one-time train-the-trainer workshop with a limited group of interested individuals and organizations.

This workshop will only be offered once. Please do not register if you are not certain that you will attend. Because we do not plan to offer this workshop again, we want to make sure that those who attend are truly interested in learning how to understand and use juvenile justice data.

This workshop is co-sponsored with Building Communities, Ending Violence at Depaul University.

When: Noon to 5 pm
Where: Depaul University, Richardson Library, Dorothy Day Room (Room 400), 2350 North Kenmore Ave.
Cost: This workshop will be offered AT NO COST to participants. However we ask that you bring your OWN lunch and snacks.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT REGISTRATION: PRE-REGISTRATION IS ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED. NO WALK-INs will be accepted. In addition, registration will be limited to 25 people. In order to register, you must let us know what police district(s) encompass your community/neighborhood. You can put in your address and find your district HERE.

You can register by completing THIS FORM. You must register by September 9th 2011 because it will take a few weeks for us to gather all of the necessary data from key juvenile justice stakeholders in time for the October 22nd workshop. We would like each workshop participant to leave on October 22nd with all of the information that they will need to write their own JJ data snapshot.

Those selected to attend the workshop will be informed of their acceptance by September 23rd 2011.

Chicago Voyagers Guiding Youth On Their Journey

Chicago Voyagers (CV) is a non-for-profit organization that guides at-risk youth on their journey by providing outdoor environmental activities that offer developmental, life-changing experiences. We teach youth about relationships, responsibility, achievement, and community service through such activities as mountain biking, camping, skiing, canoeing, and hiking trips. Today's average elementary student spends more than six hours a day playing video games, watching television, or using a computer and research shows that outdoor experiences helps reduce negative stress, childhood obesity, and protects psychological well-being. Summer is a great time to schedule an outing for your youth groups and expose them to the outdoors, so please contact for Bernie Rupe at (847) 636-0422 or Bernie@chicagovoyagers.org and check out the website (www.chicagovoyagers.org) for more details on availability and their very reasonable costs. Chicago Voyagers is currently offering 20% discounts on their mountain and trail bike trips as well as 50% discounts for those groups interested in performing environmental service projects.

Juvenile Justice Zine Release Party

THURS MAY 12, 2011
Jane Addams Hull-House Museum
800 S. Halsted St (Dining Hall)
5:30-7:30 PM - Zine Distribution and Reception
Co-sponsored with Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, Project NIA, the Chicago Freedom School, the Children and Family Justice Center at Northwestern University Law School and the Models for Change Initiative

Join us on Thursday, May 12, for a celebration of the creation of two zine series that address the history and current state of juvenile justice in the United States. Come enjoy an evening of refreshments and conversation!

The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, Project NIA, and the Chicago Freedom School will release a series of five zines to the public, created by the teaching artists, Rachel Marie-Crane Williams and Elgin-Bokari T. Smith; activist & artist, Billy Dee; and youth at the Chicago Freedom School and the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. The zines feature the voices of those affected by the criminal legal system and also tackle the issues that affect all of our communities: the History of the Juvenile Court, Girls in the System, Youth Voices (of the Incarcerated), the School-to-Prison Pipeline, and the Prison-Industrial Complex. This zine series was developed in connection with "Unfinished Business-Juvenile Justice," the community-curated exhibit at the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, on view through August 2011.

We are thrilled to co-sponsor this event with the Children and Family Justice Center at Northwestern University's Law School and the Mental Health and Juvenile Justice Action Network of the Models for Change Initiative with funding from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, who are also releasing a graphic novel informing Illinois youths of their rights in the juvenile justice system. The graphic novel was created as part of a family engagement project that relied on youth and family focus groups, wherein individuals shared their experiences in the Illinois juvenile justice system. The publication was prepared for the Illinois Mental Health and Juvenile Justice Action Network by Jean Davidson Meister, project manager, and Kim Miller, both of the Illinois Children's Mental Health Partnership; Elgin-Bokari T. Smith, illustrator, and Julie Biehl, Children and Family Justice Center, Northwestern University School of Law. Graphic design by Ashley Kittrell. The publication was developed as part of the Family Involvement Workgroup of the Mental Health/Juvenile Justice Action Network, coordinated by the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice. The preparation of this document was supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
We want to share these zines and handbooks with the public and those who care about reforming the juvenile justice and criminal legal systems. The work of creating a more just society continues, and we can all be part of the transformative social change through creative words and images.

Erase Crazy: Erasing the Stigma of Mental Illness
Thursday May 12, 2011
12:00pm- 1:30pm (lunch provided)
Presenter: Dr. Patricia Seghers, Ph.D, LCSW and Sandra Caryl
Mental health issues, like physical health issues occur on a spectrum. Certain situations (like handling a loss) are like the common cold - we can deal with them on our own. Other conditions, like severe depression, are more like treating diabetes or cancer - they require more significant treatment. Because of the stigma associated with mental illness, many of us do not seek out the help we need. Come learn how you can help people you know who are dealing with either short term or long term mental health issues and how you can help "Erase the Stigma of Mental Illness" - it could change someone's life and help build a healthier community. Dr. Patricia Seghers, Ph.D, LCSW is the Vice President of Professional Development at Pillars and Sandra Caryl, a former Pillars' client and Ambassador for the Erase Crazy program. This program has been created with and funded by the Lyons Township Mental Health Commission.
