Professional Grant Development Workshop

Master the techniques of writing superior and winning proposals

This intensive three-day grant proposal workshop is geared for: 1) those who wish to strengthen their grant writing skills and 2) beginners who wish to acquire and master the techniques of preparing, writing and winning proposals from various funding agencies. The center of attention will be on how to effectively write proposals in times of keen competition and limited resources. Much has happened in new regulations and in approaches to grant writing, be it for the researcher in the sciences and social sciences, education and non-profit professionals.

1. Navigate the world of grant procurement
2. Research and identify potential funding sources
3. Address the guidelines of federal and foundation applications
4. Focus foundation and corporate giving for the State of Illinois

A Discussion about the School to Prison Pipeline.

Join us for this conversation about the School-to-Prison Pipeline facilitated by educator and Project NIA volunteer, Emily Mannake. The discussion will focus on the social and institutional mechanisms driving up levels of incarcerated youth and adults. Join us on Thursday, May 12, for a celebration of the creation of two zine series that address the history and current state of juvenile justice in the United States. Come enjoy an evening of refreshments and conversation!

The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, Project NIA, and the Chicago Freedom School will release a series of five zines to the public, created by the teaching artists, Rachel Marie-Crane Williams and Elgin-Bokari T. Smith; activist & artist, Billy Dee; and youth at the Chicago Freedom School and the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. The zines feature the voices of those affected by the criminal legal system and also tackle the issues that affect all of our communities: the History of the Juvenile Court, Girls in the System, Youth Voices (of the Incarcerated), the School-to-Prison Pipeline, and the Prison-Industrial Complex. This zine series was developed in connection with "Unfinished Business-Juvenile Justice," the community-curated exhibit at the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, on view through August 2011.

We are thrilled to co-sponsor this event with the Children and Family Justice Center at Northwestern University's Law School and the Mental Health and Juvenile Justice Action Network of the Models for Change Initiative with funding from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, who are also releasing a graphic novel informing Illinois youths of their rights in the juvenile justice system. The graphic novel was created as part of a family engagement project that relied on youth and family focus groups, wherein individuals shared their experiences in the Illinois juvenile justice system. The publication was prepared for the Illinois Mental Health and Juvenile Justice Action Network by Jean Davidson Meister, project manager, and Kim Miller, both of the Illinois Children's Mental Health Partnership; Elgin-Bokari T. Smith, illustrator, and Julie Biehl, Children and Family Justice Center, Northwestern University School of Law. Graphic design by Ashley Kittrell. The publication was developed as part of the Family Involvement Workgroup of the Mental Health/Juvenile Justice Action Network, coordinated by the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice. The preparation of this document was supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
We want to share these zines and handbooks with the public and those who care about reforming the juvenile justice and criminal legal systems. The work of creating a more just society continues, and we can all be part of the transformative social change through creative words and images.

2011 City Youth Council Applications

For Chicago Youth Ages 15-23
Why should you apply for a City Youth Council?

• Get the chance to meet powerful decision-makers in local, state, and national politics!
• Meet other passionate, powerful students from across Chicago and work on issues you care about!
• Earn $$$ for doing something interesting, worthwhile, and fun!

What are the City Youth Councils?
We are...
• Three separate councils that address issues facing Chicago youth.
• Councils will meet quarterly with Chicago officials (like the Commissioner of Public Health, the CEO of Chicago Public Schools and advisors to the Mayor) to advise and make recommendations on the top issues and concerns of Chicago youth.
• Councils will take action each year on issues facing Chicago youth. In the past, councils have rallied for more youth jobs, met with CPS officials on improving school lunches, and advocated for technology policies and digital abuse prevention.

When does the program start and when will you work?

• Orientation is Monday, June 20th from 5-7 pm
• The City Youth Council SUMMER Program begins Monday, June 27, and ends Friday, August 19, 2011.
• Work about150 hours over the course of the summer:
• 3-5 days per week working with fellow council members researching and developing recommendations on your council's issue (Education, Teen Health, and a city-wide Youth Commission Taskforce)
• Research retreat during July.
• During the school year councils will meet at least twice per month, but sometimes more frequently depending on our work.

Thank you for inquiring about the Chicago Park District's summer day camp financial assistance program. Summer day camp programs can be viewed online at www.chicagoparkdistrict.com, beginning Monday, March 21st. Registration begins online at 9 a.m., Monday, April 4th and In-person registration begins at most parks Saturday, April 9, 2011.

Income guidelines for Chicago Park District's financial assistance program is based on guidelines issued by the United States Department of Agriculture for free and reduced fee lunch programs.

• Financial Assistance awards are only available to City of Chicago residents.

• Applicants must provide proof of entitlement for reduced or free lunch program from the patron's school. Applicants that do not participate in the school lunch program can prove eligibility by providing income verification (i.e., 2011 recent pay stubs for last 30 days, AFDC / TANF case #, and a copy of a recent IRS 1040 form, etc.) (Information submitted is confidential and may not be a matter of the public record of the Chicago Park District)
• Applicants that do not qualify for financial assistance may inquire about the payment plan option at your local park.

• Applicants must bring copies of the required documents to one of the processing sites beginning April 11th through June 13th during the established hours.

• The Chicago Park District has established "Financial Assistance Processing Centers" at various parks across the city where parents can submit required paperwork and confirm their eligibility. Once approved the applicant should present the award at their desired park location with their portion of the camp fee for the registration process.
• Eligibility for financial assistance does not guarantee a slot for day camp and cannot be used in conjunction with any other reduced/voucher programs. Recipients must register in person at their desired camp location.

TMS: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and its Treatment Implications

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is regarded as one of the three most significant advancements in psychiatry in the past 75 years. It is used for the treatment of refractory depression. TMS is a procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. Dr. Gharavi is the clinical Director of Adult Services here at Riveredge Hospital. He treats adolescents and adults. Dr. Gharavi also has a private practice in Oak Park where he practices TMS treatment.

Erase Crazy: Erasing the Stigma of Mental Illness

Mental health issues, like physical health issues occur on a spectrum. Certain situations (like handling a loss) are like the common cold - we can deal with them on our own. Other conditions, like severe depression, are more like treating diabetes or cancer - they require more significant treatment. Because of the stigma associated with mental illness, many of us do not seek out the help we need. Come learn how you can help people you know who are dealing with either short term or long term mental health issues and how you can help "Erase the Stigma of Mental Illness" - it could change someone's life and help build a healthier community. Dr. Patricia Seghers, Ph.D, LCSW is the Vice President of Professional Development at Pillars and Sandra Caryl, a former Pillars' client and Ambassador for the Erase Crazy program. This program has been created with and funded by the Lyons Township Mental Health Commission.
